Pandava hill, Venuvana and Jivaka
Bimbisara is remembered in Buddhist texts as the Buddha’s earliest royal patron. The Pabbajja Sutta says he first met the young ascetic Siddhartha on the Pandava hill at Rajagriha and offered him a share of his kingdom; Siddhartha refused but promised to return after enlightenment.
- A foundling raised by Prince Abhaya, son of Bimbisara (hence “Komarabhacca” — reared by the prince).
- Studied medicine for seven years at Taxila.
- Royal physician of Bimbisara and later Ajatashatru; physician to the Buddha.
- Gave his mango grove, Jivakamravana, at Rajagriha to the Sangha.
Bimbisara gifted the Venuvana (Pali Veluvana, “bamboo grove”) with its Karanda tank to the Buddha — the first monastic property of Buddhism. The Buddha spent several rainy seasons here. Today the park at Rajgir has a pond and a Japanese temple.
- Met Siddhartha at Pandava hill; gave Venuvana; suggested uposatha.
- Jivaka Komarabhacca: raised by Prince Abhaya, trained at Taxila, royal physician, gave Jivakamravana.
- Question: What did Bimbisara give the Sangha? Answer: Venuvana (bamboo grove).
- Question: Where did Jivaka study? Answer: Taxila.

6.6 The death of Bimbisara
🏫 School level · NCERT Class 6–12 History (the base for UPSC, BPSC, BSSC and other PSC exams)
Devadatta’s plot and two traditions
Bimbisara’s end was tragic. Buddhist texts say Devadatta, the Buddha’s ambitious cousin, encouraged Prince Ajatashatru to seize the throne. Ajatashatru imprisoned his father and starved him; Queen Kosala Devi smuggled food until she too was stopped. Bimbisara died in prison (c. 492 BCE).
| Point | Buddhist | Jain |
|---|---|---|
| Who imprisoned him | Ajatashatru, urged by Devadatta | Kunika (Ajatashatru) |
| How he died | Starved to death in prison | Took poison when he saw Kunika coming with an axe — fearing death, though Kunika came to free him |
| Aftermath | Ajatashatru later repented and confessed to the Buddha | Kunika, grief-stricken, moved his capital to Champa |
A rectangular stone enclosure near the southern gate of old Rajgir is traditionally called Bimbisara’s jail. Tradition says the king could see the Buddha on Gridhrakuta from his cell — a comfort in his last days.
Jain texts present Shrenika as a devotee of Mahavira and say he will be reborn as Padmanabha, the first Tirthankara of the next cycle. His queen Chellana was Mahavira’s cousin. Both traditions thus claimed the great king.
- Death c. 492 BCE: starved in prison (Buddhist) or poison (Jain); Devadatta’s instigation.
- Jain: Shrenika will be Padmanabha, the next first Tirthankara.
- Question: Who instigated Ajatashatru against his father? Answer: Devadatta.

| Exam | What it asks from this module |
|---|---|
| UPSC | Royal patronage of heterodox sects; Jivaka; Venuvana |
| BPSC | Venuvana gift; Jivaka’s training at Taxila; Bimbisara’s death |
| BSSC | Who was Jivaka; first monastery park |
The famous physician Jivaka was attached to the court of: (a) Bimbisara (b) Chandragupta Maurya (c) Ashoka (d) Harsha
- Jivaka served Bimbisara and Ajatashatru at Rajagriha; Charaka is linked to Kanishka.
- Venuvana was gifted by Bimbisara; Jetavana (Shravasti) by Anathapindika; Jivakamravana by Jivaka.
- Jivaka trained at Taxila, not Nalanda (Nalanda Mahavihara came much later).
- Devadatta was the Buddha’s cousin, not Ajatashatru’s brother.
Model question: Discuss the role of royal patronage in the early spread of Buddhism, with special reference to Bimbisara. Points: Venuvana and the first settled monastery; uposatha suggestion; Jivaka; security for the Sangha in Magadha; Jain patronage too; contrast with later Ashoka.
- Venuvana (Bimbisara), Jetavana (Anathapindika), Jivakamravana (Jivaka).
- Question: Where is Bimbisara’s jail? Answer: Rajgir.
