🏫 School level · NCERT Class 6–12 History (the base for UPSC, BPSC, BSSC and other PSC exams)

Diplomacy, weapons and the Pataligrama fort

Ajatashatru sent his chief minister Vassakara to the Buddha on Gridhrakuta to ask whether he could defeat the Vajjis. The Buddha, speaking to Ananda, listed the seven conditions that kept the Vajjis strong. Vassakara understood: the Vajjis could be beaten only by breaking their unity. Tradition says he pretended to be exiled from Magadha, took refuge in Vaishali, and over three years sowed distrust among the Lichchhavi chiefs until they no longer met together. Then Magadha struck.

📜 New war machines (Jain Bhagavati Sutra)
  • Mahashilakantaka — a catapult-like engine that hurled big stones.
  • Rathamusala — a chariot fitted with a mace (or blades) that moved through enemy ranks causing great slaughter.
  • The Jain text says Chetaka was defeated and the 18 gana-rajas of Kashi–Kosala who joined him (9 Mallakis and 9 Lichchhavis) were overcome.
🗺️ Bihar focus: the fort at Pataligrama
