7.3 The conquest of Avanti
🏫 School level · NCERT Class 6–12 History (the base for UPSC, BPSC, BSSC and other PSC exams)
End of the Pradyotas; Vatsa and Kosala absorbed
Shishunaga’s greatest achievement was the destruction of the Pradyota power of Avanti (capital Ujjayini). Since the days of Bimbisara and Chanda Pradyota, Avanti had been Magadha’s chief rival. The Puranas say Shishunaga “destroyed the glory of the Pradyotas”. With Avanti fell its dependencies — Vatsa (Kaushambi) and the remains of Kosala — so Magadha now ruled from the Bengal border to Malwa.
- Rich black soil of Malwa and iron resources.
- Control of the trade route from the Ganga valley to the western sea ports (Bharukachchha) and the Deccan (Dakshinapatha).
- It was the only power left that could challenge Magadha.
- Shishunaga annexed Avanti (end of the Pradyotas); Vatsa and Kosala followed.
- Avanti: Malwa resources and western trade routes.
- Question: Which rival kingdom did Shishunaga annex? Answer: Avanti (Ujjayini).

🏫 School level · NCERT Class 6–12 History (the base for UPSC, BPSC, BSSC and other PSC exams)
Where did Shishunaga rule from?
Sources disagree about Shishunaga’s capital. The Puranas say he made Girivraja (Rajagriha) his capital and placed his son at Varanasi. Buddhist tradition links him with Vaishali, the city of his mother’s people, which became a second or temporary royal seat. Pataliputra did not lose its importance, and his son Kalashoka made it the capital again.
| Ruler | Capital |
|---|---|
| Brihadrathas, Bimbisara, Ajatashatru | Girivraja / Rajagriha |
| Udayin and later Haryankas | Pataliputra |
| Shishunaga | Vaishali (Buddhist tradition) / Girivraja (Puranas) |
| Kalashoka onwards | Pataliputra (permanently) |
Vaishali was the old Vajji capital, conquered by Ajatashatru. Keeping a royal seat there helped Shishunaga — said to be of Lichchhavi descent — win the loyalty of the north-Bihar people and watch the Gandak–Ganga route.
- Capitals: Vaishali (Buddhist, temporary) / Girivraja (Puranas); son at Varanasi.
- Kalashoka made Pataliputra the permanent capital.
- Question: Which city was Shishunaga’s second capital? Answer: Vaishali.

| UPSC | Magadha–Avanti rivalry; the four great powers |
| BPSC | Shishunaga’s main achievement; temporary capital Vaishali |
| BSSC | Which kingdom Shishunaga annexed |
The most important achievement of Shishunaga was: (a) conquest of Kalinga (b) annexation of Avanti (c) invasion of Gandhara (d) defeat of the Greeks
- He ended the Pradyota dynasty of Avanti. Kalinga was conquered by Ashoka; the Greeks came in Chandragupta’s time.
- Avanti = Shishunaga; Anga = Bimbisara; Vajji = Ajatashatru; Kalinga = Ashoka (and earlier Nandas).
- Vaishali was a second/temporary capital, not the permanent one.
- Chanda Pradyota was not the king defeated by Shishunaga — he lived a century earlier.
Model question: Assess the importance of the conquest of Avanti in the growth of the Magadhan empire. Points: end of the last rival among the four great powers; access to Malwa’s resources and western trade; inclusion of Vatsa and Kosala; base for Nanda and Maurya expansion into the Deccan.
- Avanti = Shishunaga; Anga = Bimbisara; Vajji = Ajatashatru.
- Question: Was Chanda Pradyota defeated by Shishunaga? Answer: No — he lived about a century earlier.
