8.4 Extent of the Nanda empire
🏫 School level · NCERT Class 6–12 History (the base for UPSC, BPSC, BSSC and other PSC exams)
From the Beas to Kalinga
The list of conquered peoples shows that Mahapadma extended Magadhan power over the whole Ganga–Yamuna valley (Kurus, Panchalas, Shurasenas of Mathura), Kosala (Ikshvakus), Mithila, Kashi, the Narmada region (Haihayas), Kalinga and probably the Ashmakas of the upper Godavari. For the first time one king ruled from the Beas in the west to Kalinga in the east.
Some medieval inscriptions from Karnataka (12th century) claim that the Nandas once ruled Kuntala, and the name of Nanded (“Nau-Nand-Dehra”) in Maharashtra is sometimes linked with them. These are late or speculative; historians accept Nanda control of Kalinga (Hathigumpha) and of the Ashmaka region as possible, but not of the far south.
- Ended many old Kshatriya ruling houses at one stroke.
- Ruled a territory larger than any earlier Indian king.
- Built a centralised army and treasury that the Mauryas later took over.
- Extent: Beas to Kalinga; possibly Ashmaka; Deccan claims late/speculative.
- Question: Up to which river did the Nanda empire extend in the west? Answer: The Beas.
