Module 4: Agro-climatic zones
Concept
Subtopic 4.1: Three zones
- Bihar is divided into three agro-climatic zones. Zone I runs from the Himalayan terai in the north-west to the Ganga plain and grows paddy, wheat, rai, potato, maize and sweet potato. All three of those statements are marked correct.
- Zone II receives 1200 to 1700 mm of rain, with temperatures from 8.8°C to 33.8°C, and is known for commercial crops whose development has been slow. The best monsoon is in Zone II.
- The statement that Zone II and Zone III are mainly the flood centres of the Kosi, Darbhanga and Purnia divisions is the one marked false. Zone III B remains satisfactory because of irrigation. Boro paddy is sown in November-December, covers under 2% of the paddy area, and is grown mainly in Purnia and the two Champarans. Wheat on about 29% of farmland, masoor on every soil, and khesari as a low-grade pulse are marked correct; the highest masoor in Patna is not. The crop match is rice-Champaran, sesame-Gaya, gram-Patna and tobacco-Darbhanga.
