Subtopic 3.1: Distribution of rainfall

  • Rainfall is unequally distributed. In the plains it is about 100–150 cm; small parts of the north-west and north-east get over 200 cm.
  • The least rain falls on the triangular area west of Patna; the most in Kishanganj, in the north-east.
  • About 80% of annual rainfall comes from the south-west monsoon. Uncertain arrival and withdrawal of monsoon strongly affects agriculture.
  • In the north-west foothills the rain is above 1,400 mm, with July the wettest month; elsewhere in north Bihar August is the wettest.
  • Norwester rain in May is good for jute cultivation.
  • Rain at the Hathiya nakshatra (about October) is very important: it gives moisture for ripening autumn paddy and for the rabi crop.
  • In January–February winter rain comes only on one or two days.
