Module 1: Origin & Foundation of the Karnata Dynasty of Mithila
Concept
Subtopic 1.1: Establishment by Nanyadeva, Capital Simraongarh & Pala-Sena Relations
The Karnata Dynasty of Mithila (also known as the Simraon Dynasty) represents a luminous chapter in early medieval Bihar:
- Foundation (1097–1098 CE): The Karnata kingdom of Mithila (Tirhut) arose in 1097–1098 CE during the reign of Pala Emperor Ramapala. Its founder was Nanyadeva, a distinguished warrior of South Indian (Karnata / Chalukyan) Kshatriya origin who migrated to northern Bihar.
- Imperial Capital at Simraongarh: Nanyadeva established his royal capital at Simraongarh (situated in modern-day Indo-Nepal border region, Bara district of Nepal adjacent to East Champaran, Bihar). The capital was fortified with impregnable concentric mud and brick ramparts.
- Pala and Sena Rivalry: Taking strategic advantage of the disintegrating Pala authority in eastern India, Nanyadeva carved out an independent realm across Tirhut. He contested power with King Vijayasena of the rising Sena Dynasty of Bengal.
- Cultural & Musical Contributions: Nanyadeva was not only a conqueror but also a passionate musicologist and Sanskrit scholar. He authored the celebrated musical treatise Sarasvati-hridayalankara (also known as Bharata Bhashya), which classified ragas and Indian classical music traditions. He adopted the titles Dharmavaloka and Karnata-kulabhushana.
