Subtopic 5.1: Sikandar Lodi's Munger Treaty, Dariya Khan Nuhani & The Battle of Kanakpur
Following Timur's devastation of Delhi in 1398 CE, Bihar became a bone of contention between the Sharqi Sultans of Jaunpur and the independent Sultans of Bengal, until the Lodis asserted authority:
- Sikandar Lodi's Campaign to Munger (1495–1496 CE): In 1495–1496 CE, Sultan Sikandar Lodi invaded Bihar to eliminate Hussain Shah Sharqi of Jaunpur. Sikandar marched his army all the way to Munger, where he concluded a non-aggression treaty with Sultan Alauddin Husain Shah of Bengal, establishing Barh and Munger as the dividing boundary between Delhi and Bengal.
- Appointment of Dariya Khan Nuhani (1495–96 CE): After vanquishing the Sharqi influence, Sikandar Lodi appointed Dariya Khan Nuhani as the governor (in-charge) of Bihar. Dariya Khan administered Bihar with immense skill and autonomy for over two decades.
- Rebellion against Ibrahim Lodi: When Sultan Ibrahim Lodi unleashed cruelty against Afghan nobles, Dariya Khan Nuhani rebelled against the Sultan. Following Dariya Khan's death, his son Bahar Khan Nuhani declared complete independence under the royal style of Sultan Muhammad Shah.
- Battle of Kanakpur: Sultan Ibrahim Lodi dispatched a massive army led by Mustafa Farmuli to suppress Bihar. The imperial forces clashed with the Nuhani Afghan forces of Bahar Khan Lohani at the historic Battle of Kanakpur.
- Foundation of Independent Nuhani Rule: The Nuhani state flourished across southern and central Bihar, providing the initial political laboratory where young Farid Khan (Sher Shah Suri) received his early administrative training under Bahar Khan.
- Sikandar Lodi campaigned in Bihar and expanded his dominion up to Munger.
- Sikandar Lodi appointed Dariya Khan Nuhani as in-charge of Bihar in 1495–96 CE.
