Subtopic 4.1: The Sanyasi Insurrection in Purnia and Saltpeter (Sora) Producers' Defiance
Following the catastrophic Bengal Famine of 1770, dispossessed peasants joined wandering ascetics in the Sanyasi Revolt (1770–71), with Purnia acting as its major center in Bihar. Soon after, between 1778 and 1800, the Noniya Revolt broke out across northern and eastern Bihar. The traditional Noniya community, who extracted saltpeter (potassium nitrate/sora for gunpowder manufacture), rebelled against the British East India Company's coercive monopoly and exploitative purchase prices, severely impacting Saran, Vaishali, and Purnia.
- Purnia was the major epicenter of the Sanyasi Revolt in Bihar during 1770–71.
- The Noniya Revolt took place between 1778 and 1800.
- The Noniya uprising affected Saran, Vaishali, and Purnia districts due to the saltpeter monopoly.
