Module 1: Genesis of National Consciousness & Early Institutional Awakening
Concept
Subtopic 1.1: Awakening of Modern Socio-Political Consciousness in Bihar
The rise of national consciousness in Bihar was shaped by traditions of anti-colonial resistance, discontent with British policies, modern Western education, and organized political forums in Bengal. Modern institutional development began with the establishment of Patna College in 1863. Early social reformers also addressed gender and social inequities; in 1891, Smt. Aghorkamini Devi founded the first girls' school in Bihar at Patna, while Munshi Pyarelal established Sadar Anjuman-e-Hind to eradicate the dowry and tilak systems. Institutional and student mobilization gathered momentum with the founding of the Boys' Association on 3 March 1909 at the Raj Maidan in Darbhanga under the presidency of barrister Ashfaq Khan (founded by Suryadeo Narayan Verma), as well as the founding of Saraswati Academy in Darbhanga on 1 January 1901.
