Module 2: North & Central Bihar: Tirhut, Chhapra, Champaran & Patna
Concept
Subtopic 2.1: The Collapse of British Administration Across the Plains
North and Central Bihar witnessed both popular uprisings and the complete disruption of imperial administration:
- The Collapse in Tirhut: The intensity of the revolt across North Bihar was so severe that in Tirhut, the general population genuinely perceived that British governance had collapsed entirely from the country.
- Execution of Police Jamadar Hasan Ali Khan: In Tirhut, even native police personnel sympathized with the rebellion; police Jamadar Hasan Ali Khan was hanged in 1857 for aiding rebel communications.
- Assassination of Major Holmes in Champaran: In Champaran, rebel cavalry ambushed and killed Major E. S. Holmes at Sugauli near Motihari.
- The Revolt in Chhapra: In Saran district, the rebellion was spearheaded by Mohammad Hussain Khan.
- Patna Leaders & British Recruitment Bans: In Patna, influential figures like Ali Karim, Lutf Ali Khan, and Mir Ali Rangrej mobilized urban resistance. Panicked by widespread disloyalty, the British explicitly prohibited the recruitment of Rajputs (as well as Brahmins and Muslims) while forming auxiliary police battalions in Patna.

- In Tirhut, people felt as though British administration had completely ceased.
