12.1 How India’s GDP is released, and the current dashboard

🏫 School level · NCERT Class 9–12 (the base for UPSC, BPSC, SSC and Bank exams)

Who releases what, and when

Macroeconomics is studied through a small set of official numbers. Knowing who releases each number, when, and what it means is essential for current-affairs questions in UPSC, BPSC, SSC and especially Bank PO and RBI Grade B papers.

[School] The first advance estimates of GDP for a financial year are released by the NSO around:

Advance estimates are made before the year ends so that the Budget can be prepared; they are followed by provisional (around end-May) and revised estimates.

[School] India’s quarterly GDP estimates are released with a lag of about:

For example, April–June (Q1) GDP is published at the end of August. The RBI used the Q1 2026-27 figure of 7.8% in its October 2026 policy.

[Current affairs] India’s real GDP growth in Q1 (April–June) 2026-27 was:

The RBI’s 7 October 2026 statement cited 7.8% growth in Q1, driven by private consumption and investment. This quarterly rate is a different series from the annual FY 2025-26 figure (also 7.8%).

[Bank PO pattern] In October 2026 the RBI projected India’s real GDP growth for FY 2026-27 at:

The projection was raised by 40 basis points to 7.1% (Q2 7.2%, Q3 6.9%, Q4 6.8%). 5.2% is the RBI’s CPI inflation projection for the same year.

[Current affairs] Combined CPI inflation for September 2026 (base 2024 = 100) was:

Headline CPI inflation was 5.54% (rural 6.08%, urban 4.88%). 7.74% was food inflation; 4% is the RBI’s target, not the outcome.

[UPSC level] The Union Budget 2026-27 estimated the Centre’s fiscal deficit at:

BE 2026-27 is 4.3%, against a revised estimate of 4.4% for 2025-26. The Centre’s debt-to-GDP ratio was budgeted at 55.6%.

[RBI Grade B level] The Centre’s debt-to-GDP ratio in the Budget Estimates for 2026-27 was:

The Budget estimated 55.6% for BE 2026-27, down from 56.1% in RE 2025-26, in line with the shift to a debt-based fiscal anchor. 34.3% is the GCF rate.

[Current affairs] In the Sustainable Development Report 2026 (SDSN), India’s SDG Index rank was:

India ranked 94th; the report notes India gained 18 places and 9.6 index points since 2015. Older questions on 2016, 2017 or 2023 editions keep their own ranks.

12.2 Jobs, policy rates and how the indicators fit together

UR = unemployed ÷ labour force

Table 12.2 Labour-market measures (PLFS)
MeasureDefinition
Labour force participation rate (LFPR)People working or seeking work, as % of population
Worker population ratio (WPR)Employed persons as % of population
Unemployment rate (UR)Unemployed persons as % of the labour force (not of population)
Current Weekly Status (CWS)Activity status in the last 7 days; used for the monthly PLFS bulletin
Worked example

In September 2026, LFPR was 55.5% and WPR 52.7%. Check the unemployment rate.

  1. Unemployed as % of population = LFPR − WPR = 55.5 − 52.7 = 2.8.
  2. UR = 2.8 ÷ 55.5 × 100 ≈ 5.0%, matching the published rate.
≈ 5.0%

📐 Reading the numbers together
  • Real GDP growth − population growth ≈ per capita growth.
  • Nominal growth − real growth ≈ GDP deflator inflation (8.6 − 7.8 ≈ 0.8% for FY 2025-26).
  • GDP growth differs from GVA growth by the change in net product taxes.
  • CPI above the 4% target, with food inflation at 7.74%, is the background to the RBI’s October 2026 rate increase (stance: “calibrated tightening”).
  • Fiscal deficit (a flow) adds to government debt (a stock).
⭐ Key Points for Exams
  • UR = unemployed ÷ labour force; LFPR and WPR are % of population; monthly PLFS uses CWS.
  • Corridor (Oct 2026): SDF 5.25% – repo 5.50% – MSF/Bank Rate 5.75%.
  • Nominal − real growth ≈ deflator inflation; GDP − GVA gap = net product taxes.
📌 Quick-Fire One-Liners
  • Floor of the RBI corridor? Answer: SDF rate
  • Unemployment rate is a % of? Answer: The labour force

[RBI Grade B level] At its meeting ending 7 October 2026, the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee:

With CPI above the 4% target and food inflation at 7.74%, the MPC raised the repo rate to 5.50%; the SDF became 5.25% and the MSF and Bank Rate 5.75%.

[Bank PO pattern] In the RBI’s liquidity corridor, the floor rate at which banks can park surplus funds without collateral is the:

The SDF (introduced in 2022) is the floor, 25 bps below repo; the MSF is the ceiling, 25 bps above repo, and the Bank Rate is aligned with the MSF. CRR is a reserve requirement, not a rate in the corridor.

[Current affairs] After the October 2026 policy, the MSF rate and the Bank Rate were:

Repo 5.50% + 25 bps = 5.75% for both the MSF and the Bank Rate; SDF = 5.50% − 0.25% = 5.25%.

[Current affairs] According to the PLFS monthly bulletin, India’s unemployment rate (age 15+) in September 2026 was:

Overall 5.0% (rural 4.2%, urban 6.9%), unchanged from August 2026, on Current Weekly Status. 2.8% is the unemployed as a share of population, not of the labour force.

[School] The unemployment rate is the number of unemployed persons as a percentage of:

The labour force = employed + unemployed (those seeking or available for work). Dividing by the whole population would understate unemployment.

[SSC pattern] The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) is the percentage of the population that is:

LFPR counts everyone in the labour force. The share employed is the Worker Population Ratio (WPR). In September 2026 LFPR was 55.5% and WPR 52.7%.

[Numerical] LFPR is 55.5% and WPR is 52.7%. The unemployment rate is about:

Unemployed share of population = 55.5 − 52.7 = 2.8; UR = 2.8 ÷ 55.5 × 100 ≈ 5.0%. Answering 2.8% forgets to divide by the labour force.

[Bank PO pattern] The monthly PLFS bulletin measures employment on the basis of:

Monthly estimates use CWS, a short reference period that captures quick changes. Annual PLFS reports also give Usual Status (principal and subsidiary) estimates.

[UPSC level] Consider: 1. The MPC has six members. 2. Decisions are by majority, with the Governor having a casting vote in a tie. 3. The Finance Minister chairs the MPC. Which are correct?

Three RBI members (including the Governor, who chairs it) and three external members appointed by the Government. The Finance Minister is not a member.

[Numerical] Nominal GDP grew 8.6% and real GDP 7.8% in FY 2025-26. The implicit GDP deflator inflation was about:

Deflator inflation ≈ nominal growth − real growth = 8.6 − 7.8 = 0.8%. It was much lower than CPI inflation that year; the two measure different baskets (all domestic output versus a consumer basket), as Module 3 explains.

[RBI Grade B level] If real GDP growth exceeds real GVA growth in a year, the most likely reason is:

GDP = GVA + product taxes − product subsidies. If net product taxes grow faster than GVA, GDP growth exceeds GVA growth.
