Mod 20: Interlinking of Rivers, CADWM & Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan
Interlinking of Rivers
The basic purpose of interlinking of rivers is to protect the agricultural land from flood and drought. It includes transfer of water from surplus river basins to water deficit river basins mainly during monsoon months. Some of the proposed intra-state interlinking of rivers during 2017-22 period are:- 1. Budi Gandak-Noon-via-Ganga Link Scheme: The DPR for this link scheme has been prepared by National Water Development Authority (NWDA) and sent to Central Water Commission (CWC) for approval. It will create 1.26 lakh hectares of irrigation potential in Samastipur, Begusarai and Khagaria, and protect them from Budi Gandak floods.
- 2. Sakri River - Nata River Interlink Scheme: Includes Baksoti Barrage Scheme on river Sakri and transfer of Sakri water to Nata river through Baksoti Barrage Canal, ensuring irrigation facility to 68,000 hectares in Nawada, Nalanda and Sheikhpura.
- 3. Kosi-Mechi Interlinking Scheme: Ensures 2,11,400 hectares of irrigation potential in Araria, Saharsa, Supaul, Kishanganj and Purnea.
Programme for Command Area Development & Recent Schemes
Under major and minor irrigation schemes, Command Area Development and Water Management (CADWM) programme will be executed through four Command Area Development Agencies in the state, funded through Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP). A Water Regulatory Authority was established under Bihar State Water Policy, 2015. The state government launched Million Shallow Tube-wells Programme (MSTP) and Bihar Ground Water Irrigation Scheme (BGWIS). Under NABARD (Phase XI), 31,200 hectares irrigation potential has been created through 775 tube wells.Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan & Box 5.2.3
