Topic Part 1 of 2

Bihar holds vast perennial surface water resources across the Ganga basin, presenting significant potential for small, mini, and canal-fall hydel power generation. The Bihar State Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (BSHPC) was established to oversee and accelerate the development of hydroelectric projects across the state.

Presently, there are 13 minor operational hydel projects in Bihar with a total installed capacity of 54.3 MW. During the Tenth Five Year Plan, BSHPC initiated explorations for major hydel projects.

Bihar State Hydro Power Policy 2012:

Formulated to rapidly exploit renewable water resources and attract private investment. Key policy objectives:

  1. Enhance total state generation capacity by harnessing canal falls and barrages.
  2. Achieve an optimal thermal-hydro generation mix of 60:40 ratio.
  3. Encourage Independent Power Producers (IPPs) through attractive policy frameworks and institutional support.

Box 5.5.1: Classification of Hydroelectric Projects by Installed Capacity:

  • Micro Hydro Projects: Installed capacity below 3 MW
  • Mini Hydro Projects: Installed capacity from 3 MW to 25 MW
  • Medium Hydro Projects: Installed capacity from 25 MW to 100 MW
  • Big Hydro Projects: Installed capacity above 100 MW

The Mathauli Hydel Power Project in West Champaran district (capacity 800 kW / 0.8 MW) is nearing full completion.

⭐ Key Points
  • Micro Hydro Projects: Installed capacity below 3 MW
  • Mini Hydro Projects: Installed capacity from 3 MW to 25 MW
