Module 6: Namami Gange Scheme & Ganga Riverfront Rejuvenation

The Namami Gange Scheme was launched by the Central Government to abate pollution, ensure conservation, and rejuvenate the river Ganga.

Coverage in Bihar:

• The scheme targets riverside towns situated along the main stem of the Ganga; 20 towns in Bihar were initially identified for comprehensive interventions (with 32 towns recognized across broader program phases).
• Interventions include municipal solid waste management, underground sewerage network installation, interception and diversion (I&D) of municipal drains, modern electric crematoria, community washing ghats (dhobi ghats), and public toilets.

Flagship Approved Projects in Bihar:

• Four comprehensive municipal sewerage network projects approved for Buxar, Hajipur, Begusarai, and Munger.
• Patna River Front Development Project: Construction of modern promenades, ghats, and riverfront beautification along the Ganga in Patna.
